Ruth LaVerne Johns of Hialeah, Florida, passed away on Saturday, December 25, 2021, after a season of declining health. She was born on November 15, 1931, in Miami, Florida, to James O. and Sarah Ruth Johns. LaVerne was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. The oldest of six girls, she was known to them as “Sister” and as “Aunt Sister” to her 15 nieces and nephews. She was a second “Mom” to many children she babysat and spoiled them like she did her own. She was also called “Mom” and “Granna” to those who became part of her family through their close relationships. LaVerne found her greatest joys in her family and her church. She was a faithful member of The Pentecostals of Cooper City in Cooper City, Florida, for 57 years where she served in many areas of ministry. LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents, James O. and Sarah Ruth Johns, husband, George Johns, sisters, Geraldine Drake and Linda Seal Brown, brothers-in-law, William Elliott, Eddie Drake, Rev. J. Michael Seal, and Bill Brown, and her son-in-law, Rev. Ronald Cooper. She is survived by her sisters, Phyllis Callaway and husband, Tommy Callaway, of Seymour, Tennessee, Wanda Nevils and husband, Dave Nevils, of Winter Garden, Florida, Denise Crabtree and husband, Rev. Allen Crabtree, of Panama City, Florida. Children, Rev. Darrell Johns and wife, Carol Johns, Darla Cooper, Rev. Darrin Johns and wife, Ruth Johns, and David Johns and wife, Holly Johns. Grandchildren, Holly Young and husband, Daniel Young, Rev. Jesse Johns and wife, Stephanie Johns, Ryan Johns and wife, Kinsie Johns, Jamie Morales and husband, Mario Morales, Rev. Joel Johns and wife, Alonda Johns, Michael Cooper and wife, Courtney Cooper, Rev. Justin Johns and wife, Theresa Johns, Cody Johns and wife, Alexys Johns, Marcus Johns and wife, Kristin Johns, Shelby Stone and husband, Nathan Stone. Great Grandchildren, Jesse Johns Jr., Bailey Cooper, Lincoln Johns, Wesley Johns, Rhett Johns, Alyssa Johns, Zara Johns, Maxwell Cooper, Bethany Johns, Camden Johns, Warren Johns, Kendall Johns, Nora Johns, Juniper Johns, and James Johns. A funeral service will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday, January 6, 2022, at The Pentecostals of Cooper City, 5201 S Flamingo Rd, Cooper City, FL 33330. The Johns family will receive friends at the church from 5:00 pm – 6:45 pm the day of the funeral. LaVerne will be interred with her husband at the South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 S. State Road 7, Lake Worth, FL 33449 on Friday, January 7, 2022, at 10:30 am. Those planning to attend the brief service at the cemetery, should arrive early and use Lane 1.
