Peggy Jean Jeffords
9/15/1935 – 3/12/2024
Peggy Jean Jeffords, 88 of Lithia Springs, died peacefully in her sleep early in the morning of March 12, 2024. She is survived by her daughters, Debbie (Donnie) Griffin of Lithia Springs and Tami (Joe) Durbin of Smyrna; grandchildren, Allen Farmer of Atlanta, Taylor Durbin of Melbourne, FL and Jeff (Kelly) Griffin of Jacksonville, FL, and their children, Meredith and Luke Griffin; brother, James (Pat) Carter of Jesup, GA; sisters, Gerry Vaughn and Vivian Lane, both of Austell, and many more family members. She was preceded in death by her husband, Danny Smith, and sisters, Pat Hyde and Janice Quattlebaum.
Peggy was born in Odum, Georgia, the third child of Harry Eugene Carter and Mildred Withrow Carter, and moved to the Atlanta area as a child. She owned and operated McDowell Cleaners before retiring in 1997. Her success was due to excellent service and genuine care for her customers.
With a servant’s heart, Peggy was always ready to help others. She and Danny were members of Friendship Baptist Church in Austell. She made hospital, nursing home and homebound visits, worked in VBS and with the women’s ministry. She was the Card Lady, sending birthday, get well, sympathy, Christmas and encouragement cards. She delivered Meals on Wheels until her health no longer allowed her to drive.
One of her favorite things to do was sit on a beach all day. Neither she nor Danny had a real sense of direction, but they managed to find their way to Myrtle Beach, Panama City or St. Augustine. Some of her other travels with family included Cancun, Key West and Alaska. She enjoyed going out to eat and shopping. She was delighted when Arbor Place Mall opened a few miles from her house.
Peggy was an outgoing, fun-loving lady, always smiling or laughing. There was no limit to her energy and she was still dancing until last year. She survived tragedies in her lifetime without complaint. She gave God the glory for getting her through those times and never failed to appreciate His blessings. She taught her daughters to pray and always trust the Lord. She loved her family and was proud of them. Dementia took so much away, but not her sweetness and love.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 6 pm on Sunday, March 17, at Roy Davis Funeral Home. A family graveside service will be held in Odum City Cemetery.
