Nellie Mae Meeks

Nellie M. Meeks from Young Harris, GA (formerly Austell, Ga) passed away Thursday, February 23, 2023.

She was born in Mableton, Georgia on May 2, 1935, to the late Howard and Kate Allen.

Nellie was born with Spina Bifida and despite the Doctors telling her parents she wouldn’t live long; she made it to the wonderful age of 87.  She was very active regardless of her disability, she competed in wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, and wheelchair bowling. Which is where she met the love of her life, her husband of 57 years, Leland W. Meeks, that preceded her in death. She was on the Board of Directors of the Clay County Care Center Nursing Home. She obviously was an inspiration to all she met. She lived her best life on her on own terms. Nellie is survived by her daughter Kathy and her husband Gerry Petty, her sisters, Joan Knight, and Sandy Bell, and one grandchild Whitney Petty, a special niece, a daughter from another Mother Tamy Lovins, and many other nieces and nephews.  As well as her loyal companion Riley, her golden doodle.
