Merle Estelle Watson of Smyrna, Georgia, died peacefully at her home on Sunday evening, January 10, after an extended battle with cancer. She was 78. Born in Texarkana, Texas, to Carl and Della Moore, she lived a life defined by what one poet calls “the ways of duty and love.” She was caring and wise; an exceptional mother, wife, and friend; and a woman of keen intelligence, great wit, and selfless generosity. Those fortunate enough to have known her will continue to honor her life and hold close her example and her love. She is survived by her husband of sixty years, Warren Watson; three daughters, Lane Benesh of Sandy Springs, LeeAnne Watson of Mableton, and Marci McCarver of Marietta; a son, Craig Watson, of Smyrna; and her sister, Billie Faye Britt, of Elijay. According to her wishes, there will be no funeral service but rather a gathering of immediate family members for remembrance. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that donations be made in Merle Watson’s name to the American Cancer Society. Information on donating online, by mail, or by phone to the ACS can be found at the following website: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/DON/DON_0.asp. West Georgia Crematory in charge of arrangements.
