The Scoby/Henry family is saddened to announce the passing of JoAnn Louise Scoby-Henry. JoAnn passed onto her next great journey on November 29th, 2022. JoAnn was born in the small village of Sparta, Michigan, located just outside of Grand Rapids February 25 of 1939. The Scoby clan made the great move to Alaska in 1945 where she was part of the first group of kids to attend classes at the school in Tok. She lived a life of adventure even at such a young age; making the trek back and forth from the newly constructed 40 Mile Roadhouse to Sparta to attend high school. She briefly attended the University of Alaska, Fairbanks before settling down with her husband Lamar Henry and beginning their family. The Henry clan moved all around the great state of Alaska before moving to Lamar’s home state of Georgia. But The Great Land was never far from JoAnn’s mind and the family plans on returning Lamar and her remains to Tok.
She is survived by her brother Jack Scoby, her sons retired Lieutenant Colonel Michael Henry, Robert Henry, and Anthony Henry, her daughter Shari Henry, her nieces and nephews, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Mabel Scoby, and her husband, Lamar Henry.
Known for her baking and fantastic tales of growing up in The Last Frontier at 40 Mile Roadhouse, JoAnn—known as GiGi by many who loved her—leaves behind a legacy that survives on in the many recipes, stories, and memories she has imparted to her friends and family. The family finds comfort knowing she’s been reunited with the friends and family that have gone before her into that well deserved rest. A service will not be held in respect of JoAnn’s wishes. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in JoAnn’s name to a charity of your choice. JoAnn was a giver and the family would love to continue that in honor of her generous heart.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Psalm 23:6
