Hugh Ray Grimmer, 83 of Douglasville, passed on to his Heavenly home on Friday, December 16, 2022. He was born in Tarboro, NC on October 18, 1939, the son of Benjamin and Mary Elizabeth Grimmer. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Kay P. Grimmer; children, Ray (Heather) Grimmer of Douglasville and Scott (fiancé Katy) Grimmer of San Jose, CA; grandchildren, Jacob Ray Grimmer, Kaitlyn Nicole Grimmer and Brandon Scott Grimmer, all of Douglasville; siblings, Wayne (Audrey) Grimmer of Tarboro, and Retha (Jerry) Papas of Rocky Mount, NC; and sister-in-law, Shelby Grimmer of Tarboro. He was preceded in death by his parents, and recently by his brother, Joseph Grimmer.
Hugh was a graduate of Tarboro High School, Campbell University (Buies Creek, NC) and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (Wake Forest, NC). He was an honorable veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Japan. While there, he taught English at a local Japanese Church.
A loyal follower of Christ, Hugh was ordained and licensed to preach in 1966. Over the years he pastored Hale’s Baptist Church, Zebulon, NC; Bowersville Baptist Church, Bowersville, GA; First Baptist Church, Grayson, GA; Forest Hills Baptist Church, College Park, GA, and Harmony Grove Baptist Church, Union City GA; and served in several new church starts. He also served as camp pastor at Camp Pinnacle in Clayton, GA.
Hugh spread the Gospel on mission trips to Japan and Australia, and 8 trips to Peru. He ordered and sold religious signs (“Jesus Saves”) that are seen locally and in many other states.
Always ready with a smile and a hug, Hugh enjoyed being with friends and meeting new people. He enjoyed fellowship and was willing to help anyone in any way he could. He dearly loved his family.
Visitation for Hugh Grimmer will be held from 1 to 2 pm, Monday, December 19, at Ephesus Baptist Church, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 pm. Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery.
